Denmark– role model for the EU (October 28, 2005)
The Danish model for offshore wind power is to be the role model for the rest of Europe. This distinct recommendation for a common European policy on offshore wind power was presented Friday morning in Copenhagen.
The result of discussions among 80 EU officials to kick-start the development of offshore wind power plants was presented Friday morning at the Copenhagen Offshore Wind conference in Bella Center.
For the first time ever, the Council of Ministers has been asked to prepare a specific action plan for the development of offshore wind farms in Europe. The EU officials now recommend that the European governments adopt the Danish model, which is far less bureaucratic than in the other EU member states.
The Copenhagen Strategy on Offshore Wind Power Deployment policy conference, which was held at the Confederation of Danish Industries (DI), presented concrete recommendations for a common European policy on offshore wind power. The conference recommended that an exploitation of the distinct European potential for offshore wind power requires that the EU member states and the European Commission collaborate.
“We have to depart from national policies and slow, difficult administrative procedures in this area. We need a common European policy strategy and vision. To this end, Copenhagen Strategy is a solid foundation,” says Anders Stouge, Sector Director for the Danish Energy Industries Foundation at the Confederation of Danish Industries.
The efforts of the strategy meeting are a continuation of the large, international Copenhagen Offshore Wind conference that has been a major global draw. Participants at this conference were highly satisfied with the results of the EU officials.
“It is very positive that European officials have understood the clear message from the industry people at the Copenhagen Offshore Wind conference. Now it is up to the European politicians to take action so that we can achieve the established goals for clean, renewable energy in Europe,” says Bjarne Lundager Jensen, Director of the Danish Wind Industry Association.
“If the electricity market is to be able to exploit the great potential for offshore wind power in the best possible way, it requires investment in the European transmission system, and that requires long-term planning and uniform, streamlined administrative procedures in the individual EU member states. The Commission must now take the necessary steps to transform Copenhagen Strategy into practice in the relevant EU countries,” Anders Stouge added.
